I have had several bad weeks that ran into the thousands of dollars. Just a couple of months ago I spent $1,800 fixing our boat :-) I suspect this was a good lesson in the need for an emergency fund. Having $500 in an account "just in case" would really make a difference in the way a bad week feels. After High School that emergency fund should look more like $1000 and after college it should look more like 3 to 6 months of your income. I know this won’t make you feel better but in the future you will have much worse bad weeks. I have had several bad weeks that ran into the thousands of dollars.
