Work
May-5-2006
Well I am currently looking for a job. I am working for dad for now, but I really don’t want that to be my primary job.I would like to work somewhere close to home like Dairy Queen or the Mellow Mushroom so I applied at both. Dairy Queen never called and th Mellow Mushroom didn’t have any openings. So I am going to try the McDonalds by Pizza Hut. At least I can work for dad until I can find another job.

I find myself telling a lot of people that have not done much job hunting this. You can’t wait for them to call you back. Sometimes they never will, and that is not because they don’t want to hire you. They want to see how much you want to work for them.
After I got the job at Radio Shack the manager told me something that really stuck with me. He told me that he, as a general rule, does not hire people with a GED. He hired me because I was polite, I showed up dressed like I was going to work there that very day, but most of all I was persistant. I didn’t turn in an application and wait for him to call me. I called him once a day. I went to talk to him face to face several times to see if there were any developments. I let him know that I really wanted that job. It wasn’t just one of thirty applications I turned in that day.
If you want to work at Dairy Queen, go back and talk to the manager. Call them to remind them that you are still looking. Don’t be bothersome to where you make it difficult for them to do their job. Find out when the slow times are, and conviently show up then. If they tell you a good time of day to call or stop by, always be in the time window. In the application process you are a sales person. You are convinceing them they should hire you instead of the other twenty applicants they have on file. Show them why they want you there instead of those other people.
Ken’s right, but that will work better at real businesses. That mostly excludes fast food. They don’t exactly follow the same rules. Possibly try Applebee’s, the McDonalds in Wal-Mart, and Zaxby’s. They are all right by Dairy Queen. But go ahead and keep checking in with DQ.
I will have to disagree with Anonymous here. When you walk into a quality fast food restaurant, that varies by location not just the name on the front, a good manager will notice these things. They are looking for the highest quality people they can get for the wage they are offering. Even in a fast food setting the suggestions I made will set you apart from the other applicants.
I’ve been to that Grill & Chill quite a bit lately. That is a well managed store. You can tell as soon as you walk in. They have some really high quality employees. They have built an atmosphere where they care about the customer. You can see it in how they interact with you. Considering the way that store is run, I think it would help to do what I had suggested. If you go to Wendys on Memorial, Anonymous is right, it won’t matter.
