Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Luke 6:20 (NIV)
I went to BibleGateway.com and looked up that verse in every translation. The phrasing is differant, but they all amount to, “Blessed are the poor”. My thoughts are this. Jesus is trying to help the people that are poor to have something to be joyfull about. I don’t see in that statement where he says, ONLY the poor will get the kingdom of God. He’s just saying, hey, cheer up, God has a place for you and you’re going to be taken care of. Your troubles here on earth are temperary. You will no longer be poor when you get to heaven. God is thinking of you.
In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has. Proverbs 21:20 (NIV)
My definition of a poor person is one who has no savings and a small or no income, and no ability to change that. That verse tells me that God wants me to save money. It doesn’t say, “In the house of the wise there is some form of food and oil.” It says, “In the house of the wise there are stores of CHOICE food and oil” It’s ok to have nice stuff. So I don’t see being willfully poor in there.
There are several passages in the Bible that show God blessing someone with huge amounts of wealth. Look up King Soloman. That’s just one example and I’m out of time. I have to go get ready for work now. I hope this helps a little.
